    About John Burton-Race

John, a long-time resident of Devon, has been involved in the kitchen design of the new restaurant as well as menu planning food preparation. “We’re so fortunate with the produce that’s on offer locally,” he said. “The animal husbandry, the pastureland and the seafood of the country allows my menus to have a real seasonal focus.”

John has risen up through the ranks of kitchen life. Starting as an apprentice at the Wessex Hotel in Winchester and working his way through the hierarchy kitchen brigades at restaurants such as Quaglino’s, Chewton Glen, La Sorbonne. Eventually promoted to Sous Chef for the super chef, Raymond Blanc at Le Manoir aux Quat’ Saisons. When Raymond wanted to open Le Petit Blanc, he turned to John Burton-Race to head both the restaurant and the kitchen. It was here that he won his first Michelin Star.

John fulfilled his lifelong dream of opening his own restaurant in Berkshire, L’Ortolan. This is where he achieved his own two Michelin Stars. He then went on to mirror this achievement in 2000 at his restaurant at the Landmark Hotel.

In 2002 John moved to France to rediscover his love of cooking. Channel 4 jumped at the opportunity of a TV “French Leave” show based around his sabbatical. After a year of all things French inspired, John moved to Devon in 2004 and opened “The New Angel”. This successful Dartmouth restaurant was awarded a Michelin Star in 2005 and retained it until his departure in 2010.

In 2014 New Angel Notting Hill was opened showcasing Johns ever-evolving cuisine. Again John proved that he could hire and develop a new brigade to produce food at a consistently high standard.

2018 ushers in a new chapter for the hotel, with the opening of John Burton-Race Hotel & Restaurant. Following substantial renovations, the new restaurant offers diners a chance to relax in stylish comfort whilst enjoying an exciting, seasonally-focused menu and innovative wine pairings. The new space offers an entirely new dining opportunity for Torquay, and promises to be a destination for both locals and tourists alike.
