Grand chef stars in Edwardian Farm

The Grand Hotel's very own Executive Chef, Richard Hunt, has starred in a recent episode of the popular BBC2 programme, Edwardian Farm, where he showed the 'Edwardian' farmers how to make cut rounds - the original Devonshire version of scones used for cream teas.

Back in the Edwardian period, thousands of tourists began coming to the Tamar Valley by paddle steamer every summer. Day-tripping became fashionable as workers from cities like Plymouth flocked to rural spots for festivities.

Local farmers cashed in on the visitors - selling them cream teas, fresh fruit, postcards and anything else they could think of - and also used the steamers to send their produce to market.

In Episode 9 of the series, historian Ruth Goodman and archaeologists Alex Langlands and Peter Ginn pull out all the stops to put on a party for tourists, which included cream teas featuring Richard's special cut rounds.

Richard, who has his roots firmly planted in Devonshire soil, is also one of the key movers and shakers behind the Devonshire Cream Tea campaign.

Additional prizes of £50 Richardson Gift Vouchers were won by:

Classic Innovations

Oscar Wilde once said: “After a good dinner one can forgive anybody, even one’s own relatives."

So bearing in mind that the winter months are now upon us and there's nothing better to lift the spirits than a really slap up meal followed by a good night's sleep, we've launched our Classic Innovations offer, valid across our six hotels.

From 3rd January – 31st March 2011, you can enjoy rates from just £99 per room per night to include bed and breakfast plus a 3 course dinner from our Classic Innovations menus. These specially created menus (our chefs have been hard at work!) generate a warm nostalgic glow but are creative, tempting and of our usual award-winning standard. Featuring the best local produce, you’ll find some favourite dishes, such as Black Forest gateau, locally caught potted shrimps, pies and casseroles - some with exciting new ingredients. A selection of ‘proper’ puddings is also guaranteed!
